Abstract

Introduction: The return to democracy in Argentina fostered advances in the recognition of rights for diverse groups, especially regarding sexual and (non-) reproductive rights. However, persons with disabilities continue to face multiple barriers to accessing sexual and reproductive health services. Several studies indicate that attitudinal barriers among healthcare professionals constitute one of the main obstacles to the exercise of these rights. Nevertheless, recent research suggests the emergence of a new paradigm in care for this population in the field of sexual and reproductive health, in accordance with a rights-based perspective. Objective: To present the findings of these studies, highlighting the potential role of healthcare professionals as allies, an aspect that has been scarcely addressed in the literature. Method: This article is based on two independently conducted qualitative studies on the sexual and (non-)reproductive health of women with disabilities. Methodologically, the study draws on 38 in-depth interviews conducted with women with physical, sensory, and intellectual disabilities (motor, visual, hearing, and intellectual) residing in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Results: The findings show the importance that relationships with healthcare professionals have for these women, as key interlocutors in matters of sexual and reproductive health. Conclusion: The study concludes that there is a gradual transition toward a new paradigm in healthcare, oriented toward greater recognition of the sexual and reproductive rights of these women.
